How long is the Cod season
The internet seems to be alive with cod talk but for me the season hasn’t started yet- what do you think.
For the purposes of this question a cod is any fish over the minimum size which is big enough to go on a plate with some chips and boat caught ones don’t count especially those caught in the middle of June on Lumps of metal.
Back in the 70's I reckon the season ran from about the third week in August to the end on may- we had a proper spring run most years back then when the fish came back in numbers to feast on the peelers.
I am not convinced water temperature (except when it’s too cold) is a major factor at least it wasn’t where there were lots of codling in the sea and they had to move inshore looking for food.
I think it’s fair to say the season doesn’t start until you have a realistic chance of catching one and ends when that realistic chance has gone. There are always stray ones some have already been caught and I expect there will be one or two reported this weekend on the big tides. I haven’t seen one yet this season let alone caught one.
For my money the season will truly start when someone can catch 2 in a tide from anywhere east of Dungeness. Dungeness does rather distort things because its close to boat fishing with such deep water close to shore.
Well I have gazed into my crystal ball and will predict the season will start on the weekend of 6/7 November and will end on 8/9 January I make that a 9 week season- I hope I am wrong that’s depressingly short. So get out there this weekend and catch 2 codling.
