Dungeness Casting Routine.

Post  Colin Constable on Thu Mar 04, 2010 11:53 am

Be prepared for a very strong lateral current running parallel to the beach. If you cast straight out from your pitch, the lead will drag at least 40 to 50 yards to your left (on a making tide). To overcome this, walk 50 yards to your right along the beach and cast straight out. By the time you return to the fishing station the lead should have dug in somewhere straight out in front of you. If you are a group of anglers together, it is absolutely vital that this procedure is carried out in sequence to avoid casting over each other. The angler to the left of the group walk the 50 yards to the right, cast first, and return, then the second angler and so on. This is a very necessary part of fishing Dungeness if there is to be harmony amongst the group. Conditions can be very testing, and it is the responsibility of each individual to maintain a harmonious atmosphere in the ranks for the duration of the vacation.

Similar to DJs opening thread but a different lesson
When fishing from shore/pier, make sure to cast your lead UPTIDE.... the push/flow of tide on your line will ensure that your rig is pushed/fished hard on the bottom, where the majority of fish are feeding. Casting DOWNTIDE or allowing your rig to move downtide will result in the tide flow lifting your line/rig and bait, up off the bottom, thus you will be fishing away from where most fish are feeding. This may seem a simple tip....but i see many many anglers on the beach not adherring to this simple rule....the result being that the chance of a fish will be seriously diminished. If fishing a 'rolling' bait for flatties and bass with a plain or semi gripped weight, cast well uptide. When your line moves downtide and passes '12oclock' from your rod tip, reel in and recast. Try it, and pay attention to it....your catch rate will improve...trust me.
